Pilates for Scoliosis and Asymmetrical Bodies: Focus on creating modified versions of Classic Pilates exercises, and the use of props and imagery, both on and off the apparatus, for individuals with postural and/or structural asymmetries, whether caused by poor posture, injury, chronic conditions, or scoliosis. 
  2. The Legacy of Carola Trier: Gain knowledge and insight into the legacy of work passed onto Carola Trier directly from Joseph Pilates.   3. Cadillac Techniques: Jillian Hessel is highly respected for her work on this multi-faceted apparatus. Explore the versatility of the Cadillac from basic exercises to advanced acrobatic and dance-inspired movements.
  4. Fabulous Feet!: Learn essential exercises to strengthen the structural integrity of the feet, including Joe Pilates’ Foot Corrector and Toe Exerciser and other small props.  Learn how to integrate correct use of feet onto the larger Pilates apparatus.
  5. Learning from Three Masters: Featuring the work of Jillian’s three principal mentors: Kathleen Stanford Grant, Carola S. Trier, and Ron Fletcher.
  6. Pilates for the Mature Client: Special focus on developing Pilates-based programs for clients age 50+.
  7. The Wonderful Wunda Chair: Joe Pilates originally designed the Chair as a standalone workout to be done in the home. Learn archival and modern updates from a vast repertoire of exercises.
  8. Pilates—Truly, Madly, Deeply!: A workshop featuring Jillian’s signature Posture Analysis, her B.E.A.M. Fundamentals; and Pilates Mat exercises.
  9. Vertical Pilates: Everyone needs to do standing exercises. It’s how we get around in life!  We need to adjust to uneven ground surfaces, stepping on and off curbsides, rising from sitting to standing, getting in and out of a car, and of course walking, hopping, skipping, running, and jumping. Weight transfer from one foot to another is a basic facet of ambulation. Explore how Pilates can train us for life!
  10. Reform Your Matwork!: The Matwork, whether standing, seated, supine, or prone, should prepare us for the moving platform on the Reformer. Discover Jillian’s unique approach to using Matwork as a preparation for Reformer Work.
  11. The Pilates Arc and Spine Corrector: The unique curved surface of the Spine Corrector and Pilates Arc make it possible to work the body at every possible angle you can imagine. Explore the versatility of these apparatuses, both as a standalone tool, or in combination with the Reformer and Cadillac!
  12. Pilates: What It Is, What It Does: This class is based on Carola Trier’s beloved children’s book, Exercise, What It Is, What It Does, published in 1982.  Jillian worked for Carola during the time in which she wrote her book, now out of print.  Progress through Carola’s book, page by page, and learn easy, fun-to-do exercises at home, with and without props.
  13. Auxiliary Play—A Workshop to Spice Up Your Teaching!: In this fun, informative, and original one-day workshop, you will learn: new routines on the Ped-O-Pul, Gondola Pole (Long Pole), and Mat series originally taught by Kathy Grant, as well as Magic Circle moves (including a standing and seated chair workout) and High Barrel specialty exercises.
  14. The Upper Quarter—A Neck, Shoulder Girdle, and Thoracic Spine Workshop: Due to the repetitive stress and relative inactivity of modern life, many Pilates clients have upper quarter issues. Explore many different exercise modalities, both on and off Classic Pilates equipment, to address this common problem.
  15. Keeping the Flame Mentoring Intensive Retreat: KTF consists of three Levels of Instruction Modules. Each Module is 3 days in duration, 6 hours per day (18 CECs Total over 3 days for each Module). This is a unique opportunity to experience in-depth training in a small group setting with a Master Pilates Instructor, in your own space! Jillian may be booked to teach any module, in any order. However, if you have never worked with Jillian before, it is highly recommended to start with Module I.  Please contact the Studio for more details & descriptions of each Module.

NOTE: The Workshops listed above may all be customized to fit specific time constraints, size of venue, number of attendees, etc. Jillian is always open to designing a new Workshop to fit your specific needs/requests! ❓Is it Safe for YOU to Forward Flex your spine❓

A famous quote attributed to Joseph Pilates is “You’re as young as your spine is flexible.” Everyone knows Pilates is great for the body, BUT…
⁉️what if you have a herniated disc 
⁉️spinal fusion

❎ BOTH of these conditions are contraindications for forward flexion of the spine, which is a foundational movement in much of the Classical Pilates Repertoire‼️

✅ BOTH men & women lose bone density as they age
✅ For post menopausal women, in particular, precipitous bone loss can lead to serious conditions such as ‼️osteopenia 
‼️ osteoporosis

❎ Forward spinal flexion is also contraindicated for this population, as these movements can lead to stress fractures. 

❓WHAT TO DO❓
✅ If you still want to do Pilates, but you know you shouldn’t be rolling & forward flexing your spine…

✅ Special classes, such as the one I taught last weekend for the Pilates Platform (video clips above) are a great solution😀
✅ We work out hard, but avoid those contraindicated movements‼️

✅ Please take note of these types of classes, wether you’re a #pilatesteacher or #pilatesstudent 

✅ If you’re a woman age 45+ be sure to get a baseline bone density screening, and follow ups every few years.

Yes, that’s Carola’s distinctive German accent you’re hearing, as she guides me through the Jack Knife (Overhead) exercise on the Universal Reformer, back in 1989! 

This video clip is from the archival DVD, Carola Shares. The still shots of Carola performing Jack Knife used to hang in her Studio, where I learned to teach Pilates in 1981-82. Hands on guidance of the client, specific verbal cues, exercise rhythm/dynamics & precise breathing patterns are just a few of the precious tidbits of information Carola gives us here. 

This is the ONLY footage of Carola in action in existence!  It was recorded at a live Workshop she taught for Teachers, back in 1989, in Tarzana, California.

Many of you have asked for more exercises for the ”Mature”Pilates Client.
This series should challenge ANYONE!
I’m using a Small Soft Ball, that’s easy to grip.

✅ prone back extension with ball pass from hand to hand behind the back 2-3 sets, moving slowly, with precision
✅double arm & leg extension, squeezing the ball down towards the buttocks 3-5 sets
✅double arm & leg extensions with upward pulse of the ball towards the ceiling. Slow & deliberate pulses. 8-10 reps. 2-3 sets.

Let’s start getting into swim shape right now with some booty, leg toning & ab work!

 ✅ Great Mat Exercise for booty & back of your legs:  raise your hips off the mat. Pulse upwards with the hips, flexing the top foot to the ceiling. Then, keeping your hips elevated, kick the raised leg up & down. Reps:  3 sets of 10
✅ Reverse Ab Curls with Leg Springs. Can be done in both parallel and pilates “V.” Reps: 3 sets of 10
✅ Full Short Spinals with a delicious bonus stretch at the end🏋️‍♀️😄💪😍
