2017 Teacher Mentoring Program

3-Day Intensive Presented by
Master Teacher Jillian Hessel

Beverly Hills, California

I am now accepting students for my popular Level I, Level II, and Level III mentorship sessions! If you're a Certified Pilates Teacher searching for an in-depth training experience with me, 2017 is the year!

The best part is:

  • The program is small (only 4–8 students).
  • We can customize it according to your individual needs.
  • YOU can request the course of study! For example, one student from Japan who attended the March 2014 course suggested that I share some of Carola Trier's "special dancer exercises" and "corrective exercise techniques."

Jillian Hessel and Risa Sheppard Team Up for Two Exciting Workshops on the Same Day!

Risa and Jillian

WORKSHOP #1 (10:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m.)
with Jillian Hessel

Jillian will focus her session on using exercise bands to enhance any mat work routine, and also to recreate many apparatus exercises. This special class will help you and your clients prepare for summer travel — no need to miss your Pilates workout while on the road!

WORKSHOP #2 (12:30 p.m.–2:30 p.m.)
with Risa Sheppard

Risa will present her own unique take on the spiritual and metaphysical aspects of Pilates work, inspired by the teachings of her mentor, Ron Fletcher, and Louise L. Hay, author of Heal Your Body. She will demonstrate how your physical stresses relate to your emotional life, and how to work through ways to help move yourself past these roadblocks. This workshop won't be a quick-fix for your ailments; however, it will be an opening of the gates to a possible road to recovery.

The Wonderful Wunda Chair

This workshop will feature Chair exercises I learned from Carola Trier and Kathy Grant, with a special emphasis on how precise foot placement enhances the entire exercise. There will be a special emphasis on upright exercises, which help our clients integrate the supine, prone, and side-lying Pilates exercises up onto their feet to work on balance, weight transfer, and vertical postural alignment.

2:00 p.m.–4:00 p.m.
Carola Trier's Circuit Workout

Carola Trier had a very busy studio during the time I taught for her, back in 1981–82. She devised a circuit program for her healthy clients, which moved them around on all of the equipment during their 55-minute session. Together, we will reconstruct her original circuit program during this 2-hour studio session, and decide if it is still a valid workout for today's healthy population.

Saturday, 5/6/2017 • 2:00 p.m.–5:00 p.m.
Carola's Posture Analysis and
Kathy Grant's Pre-Pilates

Carola started each new client with a posture analysis, which presented an opportunity for her to assess any skeletal misalignments, bond with her client, and set new exercise goals together. Kathy Grant didn't believe ANYONE should begin their with Breathing 100s. She devised a warmup routine of pre-Pilates Fundamentals for all her clients. In this 3-hour session, we will learn to assess one another's posture, review Jillian's B.E.A.M. Fundamentals (Breathe, Energize Align & Move), and rock on with a Classic Pilates Mat Class, including modern updates and modifications.

Sunday, 5/7/2017 • 1:30 p.m.–3:30 p.m.
Reformer — Quadriped and Upright Excercises

Challenge your clientele age 50 and up to stay functional and fit with bilateral and unilateral exercises that emphasize core stabilization, balance, control, and coordination on the Reformer.

A 3-Day Intensive with Jillian Hessel

Wednesday, 5/17/2017 • 5 hours (times TBD)

We'll begin Day One with Jillian's signature Posture Analysis, B.E.A.M. Fundamentals (Foundational Pre-Pilates Work), and a Matwork class. It's of particular importance for each Pilates teacher to evolve their own version of the Fundamentals, and to learn how to incorporate them into each class, as part of the warmup. It's especially important when teaching a multi-leveled class, because the teacher must challenge every student, without overwhelming the less experienced students, and also keep the class flowing. This workshop will also feature a presentation on the importance of the feet in Pilates work, in preparation for the apparatus work.

Thursday, 5/18/2017 • 5 hours (times TBD)

Day Two begins with a group mat class, using a small prop, such as Therabands or Magic Circles. This class will serve as an active review of the principles already covered, and get everyone moving. Jillian will demonstrate specific breathing patterns, transitions, and teaching cues learned from her first-generation teachers, including Carola Trier, Kathy Grant, and Ron Fletcher. Jillian will also demonstrate specific hands-on guidance for certain exercises, as well as modifications for students who can't perform the original Mat Exercises. After mat class, we'll reset for Universal Reformer apparatus work for the remainder of the day.

Friday, 5/19/2017 • 5 hours (times TBD)

Once again, we will begin Day Three with a group class. The object is to have everyone moving and breathing together! We'll use Spine Correctors, the Ladder Barrel, and Arcs to demonstrate how the Matwork can be altered, using the "uphill/downhill" aspects of the Arc surfaces. The rest of the day will feature the legacy of Carola Trier (the first teacher trained by Joseph Pilates) on the Cadillac. Jillian owns — and still teaches on — an original Cadillac, built under Joseph Pilates' direct supervision for Carola Trier! Don't miss this very special opportunity to learn from this modern-day Pilates Master Teacher!

Reinventing the Wheel

WORKSHOP #1 (10:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m.)
Risa Sheppard Presents: Reinventing the Wheel

Learn about the Wheel of Fitness (aka the Magic Circle, or Flex Ring) from its originator. Take home a complete, full-bodied "workout on the go" with this excellent, portable Pilates original! Join Risa as she takes you through the Wheel's history, and its unique design, to help you and your clients with balance, strength, and control. If you are interested in bringing your own fitness product to market, a discussion of Risa's experiences in marketing and promoting the Wheel is included.

Fabulous Feet

WORKSHOP #2 (12:30 p.m.–2:30 p.m.)
Jillian Hessel Presents: Fabulous Feet

The feet are without doubt our most ignored, maligned body parts! Learn essential exercises to strengthen the structural integrity of the feet, and how to maintain natural flexibility. We'll work with the Toe Exerciser & Foot Corrector, which Joseph Pilates designed specifically for the feet, and other small props. Then, observe how precise foot placement onto the Pilates apparatus can improve the outcome of almost any exercise!
